A chill ran down my spine. “What do you mean, baby?” I asked, keeping my voice steady.
Jennifer hesitated, then whispered, “He was at my old house.”
My breath caught. “Your old house? Before the adoption?”
She nodded. “He talked to my first mommy. They argued.” Her little hands clenched my shirt. “Then she was gone.”
My stomach dropped. Richard had never mentioned knowing Jennifer’s birth mother.
I forced a smile. “Jennifer, are you sure?”
Tears welled in her eyes. “I remember his voice.”
