I Cut My MIL Off Because of What She Said to My Daughter About Me

Life in a family can have its ups and downs. However, there are some boundaries that are uncrossable. We hear about one of those cases in today’s story. What appeared to be a family drama quickly became a police investigation.

She described the incident.

I was in a car accident with 30 F. I had to be removed from the vehicle. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt too badly, but from what I could see before I was taken to the hospital, the other person wasn’t doing too well. I was instructed to spend the night in the hospital to check for concussions. I called my husband and informed him of the situation. When he hurried to see me after dropping off our daughters, ages 6, 11, to my MIL, he mixed up the incidents.

While I was waiting to be released from the hospital, my husband brought our daughters the following morning. My six-year-old started crying and exclaimed, “I don’t want you to die,” as soon as she saw me. I reassured her, telling her I was very fortunate and I wasn’t dying. Then she said, “Grandma said she hoped I died so they could move in with her and my husband.” My spouse and I were taken aback, and my 12-year-old attested to having heard her say that. My spouse promised to call my mother-in-law.
He appeared enraged when he returned to the room. but waited to speak until after we got home. He claimed that although my MIL had initially denied it, she had eventually given in to his persistent pressure. She claimed not to mean it. I believed we were near. However, I suppose not.

That she would want that hurts me so much. I expressed my desire for neither the girls nor I to speak with her. Although I don’t want the girls and I to have a relationship with her, I did tell my husband that he could. My spouse said he agrees with me. Then he called MIL and informed her of my words.

It wasn’t something she took well. She sobbed as she arrived at our house, explaining that we were misinterpreting her words and that there had been a misunderstanding. Then, my husband questioned, what did you mean?

She broke down in tears and went into a complete meltdown, claiming that although she had always wanted daughters, my husband was the only child she could have after him and that the girls were more like her daughters than granddaughters. She claimed that when she said that to our 6-year-old, she wasn’t acting rationally. My spouse was forced to take her home because she became so agitated.

He said he didn’t know she felt that way when he returned and asked if I still wanted to break up with her. Yes, I replied. He did not argue, just said, “Okay.” But now that a week has passed and he hasn’t said much about what transpired, I’m beginning to feel bad and wonder if I misinterpreted what happened.
