In an inspiring act of dedication, Illinois teacher, Ms. Helma, ensured that her 4th-grade student with cerebral palsy, Maggie Vazquez, could join a two-day hiking trip. Facing logistical challenges, Wardenaar explored various solutions, eventually finding a carrier called the Freeloader. With Maggie’s approval, the $300 carrier made the outdoor adventure possible.

From May 30 to June 1, Wardenaar, Maggie, and their group embarked on the camping trip, encountering birds, frogs, and deer. Despite the challenging terrain, Wardenaar found inspiration in Maggie’s resilience and joy. Maggie’s mother praised Wardenaar’s unwavering support, acknowledging her advocacy since first grade.

AGC’s executive director, Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, hailed Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination,” highlighting the importance of inclusivity and the profound impact educators can have on their students’ lives.
