Trump’s Support for DeSantis Sparks Speculation About Governor’s Future Plans

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will join President-elect Donald Trump at the Army-Navy game on Saturday, sparking speculation about his political future and who he will appoint to fill Marco Rubio’s Senate seat. Rubio is stepping down to become Secretary of State in Trump’s administration.

Once rivals, DeSantis and Trump appear to have mended their relationship. DeSantis is seen as a contender for a Cabinet position and faces pressure to appoint Lara Trump, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law, to the Senate. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is also being considered. So far, DeSantis has not publicly commented on the decision.

“Trump and DeSantis now have a solid working relationship,” said former DeSantis advisor Will Chamberlain. GOP strategist Ed Rollins added, “Aligning with Trump benefits them both, especially if DeSantis joins the administration.”

DeSantis is also being considered for defense secretary if Trump’s first nominee, Pete Hegseth, is not confirmed. Looking ahead, the term-limited governor may run for president in 2028 but could face competition from J.D. Vance, Trump’s expected vice president, who is likely to have Trump’s endorsement.

Despite uncertainties, DeSantis remains influential, thanks to his Florida Freedom Fund, which has raised millions for conservative candidates. As Florida GOP strategist Jamie Miller noted, “DeSantis and Trump will perform better as allies, whether DeSantis stays in Florida or joins Trump’s team.”
